Biography

Benton is a member of the Business & Commercial Litigation group. He leverages his broad litigation experience in private practice as well as with the U.S. Department of Justice to zealously advocate and achieve results that protect and further clients’ interests and business objectives.

Benton comes to FBT from the litigation department of an AmLaw 25 firm in Washington, D.C., where he represented clients in complex commercial disputes, federal antitrust litigation, and securities matters. Prior to that, he represented the United States as a Trial Attorney with DOJ’s Tax Division as well as its Office of Immigration Litigation. He has appeared as lead counsel in numerous federal district courts, bankruptcy courts, and federal courts of appeals, where he briefed and argued dispositive motions, successfully opposed class certification, and handled all aspects of litigation before federal courts throughout the country. Earlier in his career, Benton represented publicly traded Fortune 500 companies in state and federal courts across the country for complex product liability, environmental tort, and mass tort actions as national coordinating counsel.

Benton also has substantial appellate experience. Since serving as a law clerk to the Honorable Rhesa H. Barksdale of the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Fifth Circuit, he has successfully briefed matters before a majority of the federal courts of appeals and presented multiple oral arguments.

Benton enjoys learning the ins and outs of a client’s business and understands that the legal issues involved with any given representation must be addressed with the business in mind.
