Opportunities @ FBT Gibbons

Foreign Legal Internship Program

FBT Gibbons operates a Foreign Legal Internship Program (FLIP), which offers foreign law school graduates the opportunity to complete a three-month internship in the firm’s New York office. While many of our FLIP participants are German Referendare who complete part of their mandatory clerkship (aka “Wahlstation”) at FBT Gibbons, our FLIP is open to applicants from all countries.

The FLIP program provides an introduction to the U.S. legal system, with a particular emphasis on U.S. corporate and commercial law. Participants develop practical skills shadowing attorneys on transactional matters and through hands-on assignments, including legal research, drafting memoranda, and preparing summaries of U.S. statutory and case law. FLIP participants also have opportunities to attend court hearings, depositions, and internal training sessions.

The program is led by our German colleagues, Peter Flagel and Myriam Rastaetter, and our colleague Brian DiBenedetto. Other program highlights include:

  • Exposure to U.S. common law methodology, transactional practice, and regulatory frameworks
  • Comparative law research projects that draw on your legal training
  • Mentorship from attorneys with experience in transatlantic matters and cross-border deals
  • Participation in firm events, client meetings, and professional development programming
Requirements
  • Successfully passed law school in your home country with an above-average grade
  • Strong English skills
  • Interest in becoming familiar with the Anglo-American legal system
Application

Please apply through our careers portal. Your application should include the following documents:

  • A personal letter in English, explaining your interest in the program
  • A resume in English
  • Copies of credentials (e.g., copy of your law school transcript or final exam)
  • A letter of recommendation, in English, from a member of the legal profession

Gibbons Fellowship

The Gibbons Fellowship in Public Interest and Constitutional Law is intended for attorneys who want to dedicate a structured period of their careers to pro bono advocacy on behalf of those who need it the most. Gibbons Fellows work full-time managing the firm’s impact‑litigation docket, while collaborating with public interest groups and community leaders on cases involving civil rights, immigration, criminal justice reform, and other significant constitutional issues.

The Fellowship usually entails a one- or two-year term and is open to attorneys who demonstrate a strong commitment to public interest legal work. Other qualifications include:

  • Admission to the bar (New Jersey admission is helpful but not required)
  • Outstanding legal research, writing, and oral advocacy skills
  • Ability to engage in strategic thinking and problem-solving on complex issues.
  • Typically two or more years of experience in the field of public interest law
  • Outstanding research, writing, and advocacy skills

Applicants typically have prior legal experience, such as practice experience or a judicial clerkship, and must be admitted to practice law (with jurisdictional requirements outlined in the application materials). Fellows are selected for one‑ or two‑year terms.

Interested candidates can visit our Gibbons Fellowship page for more information.

Post-Clerkship Program

FBT Gibbons offers an entry-level opportunity designed specifically for attorneys who are in the midst of, or who have recently completed, a judicial clerkship. We accept and review resumes on an ongoing basis. This means that interested candidates can contact our recruiting team at any time before, during, or after they’ve completed their judicial clerkship.

We believe that former law clerks bring an invaluable perspective to our firm, one characterized by judicial rigor, strong research and writing skills, and meticulous attention to detail. Those who join the firm through our Post-Clerkship Program have access to mentors and structured training programs that parallel those offered to our first-year associates. This programming is designed to not only deepen subject-matter knowledge in your practice area, but to also impart core business concepts and skills that will enable you to provide valuable industry and market context when working with clients.

If you are completing a judicial clerkship and are eager to join a firm that will challenge you, champion your development, and celebrate your achievements, we encourage you to inquire about our Post-Clerkship Program. Please submit your application through our careers portal. We look forward to hearing from you.

Note: FBT Gibbons LLP is an equal opportunity employer.
