Biography

Andrew focuses his practice on intellectual property (IP) strategy, including patent preparation, prosecution, portfolio management, freedom-to-operate (FTO) studies, and patent opinions. As a former in-house counsel and patent examiner, Andrew has a deep appreciation for the role IP plays in businesses today and takes a strategic approach to obtaining commercially meaningful patent protection. He is also experienced navigating the uncertainties that arise in business and comfortable counseling decision makers through the most important IP risks.

Prior to joining the firm, Andrew was Senior Patent Counsel at Johnson & Johnson (J&J), where he supported the company’s surgical robotics and digital surgery platforms following the acquisitions of Auris Health and Verb Surgical. At Johnson & Johnson, Andrew led IP matters for the most complex and high-profile robotics initiatives within J&J MedTech’s $30+ billion business.

In addition to his substantial experience with complex medical devices and robotic systems, Andrew has many years of experience in the high-tech sector, including as in-house counsel at Synaptics Incorporated where he managed IP matters for the Biometrics Products Division. At Synaptics, Andrew collaborated closely with engineers and researchers to protect technologies spanning optical and capacitive fingerprint sensors, semiconductor packaging, OLED and LCD display integration, computer vision algorithms, security protocols, and analog circuit design.

Andrew also has many years of experience preparing and prosecuting patent applications as outside counsel, including at an AmLaw 50 law firm where he supported some of the world’s largest and most well-known companies across the high-tech, medical device, and oil and gas industries.

Andrew began his career as a patent examiner at the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office, where he conducted prior art searches and examined patent applications for motor vehicle and land vehicle technologies, including complex hybrid electric vehicle drive trains. This early experience provided Andrew with the solid foundation necessary to efficiently navigate patent applications through the patent office and effectively advocate for his clients.
